Taking Care of Small Dogs - Yorkies

A short note on taking care of small dogs, in this case Yorkshire Terriers.

These little terriers are feisty and surprisingly tough for their size. They can be noisy and very dominating for such small dogs but respond well to a reasonable amount of discipline.

Feeding these small dogs can be a real nightmare if you spoil them. You only have to do it once and they remember. Try to get them to eat their regular food after a treat and they will refuse. Give in to them and treat them again and you have lost all control!

Better to tough it out with them when they’re in a fussy mood. Put their food down and if they look up at you as if to say “…and this is?” then take it away and put it in the fridge for a while. A couple of hours should do it, then put the food bowl down again and see if they eat it. Repeat this through out the day (if you can) until they eventually give in through hunger and begrudgingly eat it.

Moral of this story?

Don’t substitute regular food with treats!
